Old World Hickory Golf, the veteran-owned shop outside Portland, Oregon, that sells playable vintage and antique hickory golf clubs, has a simple report card so far: every review posted to oldworldhickorygolf.com is five stars. What customers say about Brad's work
Hickory golf is a small world. People know who does good work, and they talk. Here's what they've said on our site, word for word.
"Brad is, hands-down, the best purveyor of hickory golf goods. Nicest guy in the hickory world, always available for advice and support, and incredibly reasonably priced. Can't recommend him highly enough or give enough stars."
Jesse Lerman, verified buyer
"Brad is a master craftsman, I'm always impressed by his workmanship."
Edward Fitzgerald, verified Club Builder buyer
"When it comes to hickory golf club repair and restoration, Brad Harvey is simply in a class of his own. The level of detail and care he brings to every project is second to none."
Jon McClean
"Brad is one of the top hickory golf suppliers and repairman in the industry, his quality, expertise and product is all first rate!"
Peter Yagi
Brad grew up in Medford, Oregon, and has been working on hickory clubs for over three decades. He's also coached golf for 24 years, and that's the part people don't expect. He doesn't just know how a 1920s brassie or a rare wooden golf club was made. He knows how it should feel in your hands and what it'll do when you swing it.
"A hickory club has to play, not just look right on a wall. When I build one, I'm thinking like a coach. Is the shaft the right flex for this player? Is the grip going to stay put? Would I hand this to a student?" Brad Harvey, co-owner
The Club Builder: an antique head to a playable club in four steps
Most people who want to try hickory golf hit the same wall. Original clubs are scattered across auction listings, plenty of them are wall hangers, and nobody tells you whether the one you're bidding on is safe to swing.
The Club Builder fixes that. You pick four things:
- A head. Antique wood heads (drivers, brassies and spoons), pulled from original inventory and dated to their real era by Brad. Heads start at $10.
- A hickory shaft. $15, in regular, stiff or extra stiff flex.
- A grip. Soft suede that feels broken-in from day one, or tacky leather that stays put when your hands sweat.
- How it's built. A DIY kit ships in 2 to 3 days. Or Brad fits the head, pins and glues it, stains the shaft, sets the grip and finishes it, ready to play, for a $30 build fee. Assembled clubs take about two weeks, because shellac doesn't dry on a deadline.
Building a wood yourself? Add the $5 bore-out and we'll size the hosel to your shaft before it ships.
Customers who've been through it:
"Love my new Spoon, now if I can improve my hitting! Quality construction with a nice shaft and grip to compliment the Fancy Face head."
Tom Adams, verified Club Builder buyer
"Very fair price."
Mark Hjelden, on the $30 build fee
What we're seeing from customers
We've learned a lot watching how people actually buy hickory. A few patterns stand out.
Nearly half of the heads we sell go out bare. The buyer shafts it themselves. Hickory golf has a real community of home club makers, and they want good parts, not just finished clubs.
Most shaft buyers buy more than one. About 70% of hickory shaft orders include two or more. People aren't fixing one club. They're building sets.
Repeat customers come back fast. About one in four customers orders again, and the typical gap between orders is under two weeks. That's somebody in the middle of a build who needs the next part, which is why we keep shafts, grips and whipping thread stocked.
The reviews say the same thing:
"Perfect! All items exactly correct! Grips are really nice! Fast shipping! Highly recommended! This is my second order with this great company!"
Scott Middlekauff, verified buyer
"These are awesome grips. They are a perfect length... They are tacky so no slippage issues when swinging the club either."
Steve S., verified buyer, on tacky leather grips
"Found this golf wood whipping thread puller tool. Sometimes hard to find but Hickory Golf had it in stock."
Charles Evans, verified buyer, on the thread puller
"This gage is a great tool for figuring out the loft of the hickory irons that I am repairing."
Steve S., verified buyer, on the loft and lie finder
"Grips were as advertised, inexpensive, and arrived very quickly... Thanks for the handwritten note! I don't think I've ever gotten one before with a purchase."
Verified buyer, September 2026
We'll keep writing those.
Why buy here instead of an auction
Buying hickory at auction is a gamble. Photos are often poor, the shaft is a guess, and the seller may not write back. We built the site to be the opposite.
- Real prices, real stock. What you see is what's on the shelf, from hickory woods and irons to hickory putters.
- Playable, not decorative. Clubs are picked and built by someone who plays and teaches the game.
- Honest dating. Brad dates each head to its real era. Gutty-era is pre-1900, hickory-era runs to about 1935.
- Fast shipping. In-stock orders go out in 1 to 2 business days, DIY Club Builder kits ship in 2 to 3, and domestic orders over $200 ship free.
- A person answers. Questions get a reply within one business day, from the people who pick, pack and build your order.
"I've been buying and selling hickory a long time. The golfers I want to help are the ones who got burned by a bad auction buy and almost quit. Send me a picture of what you've got. I'll tell you straight whether it'll play." Brad Harvey, co-owner
